FIFA opens disciplinary case against Argentina after World Cup final incidents | OneFootball

FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee said it has opened proceedings against the Argentine Football Association after incidents following the 2026 World Cup final against Spain at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, United States.

The action, taken after a report by the appointed ethics officer, also names Argentina players Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes and Thiago Almada, and assistant coach Roberto Fabián Ayala. Spain midfielder Pablo Martín Páez Gavira, Gavi, is also under investigation.

The AFA faces potential breaches of articles 13, 14, 15 and 17, covering the use of a sporting event for non-sporting statements, improper conduct, discrimination and racist assaults, and matters of match order and security.

Article 17 concerns include discriminatory chants and gestures, delays to kick-off, failure to follow match and security protocols, the display of inappropriate messages by the team and spectators, and objects thrown by spectators in several Argentina matches.

Individually, Molina faces two assault charges, one completed and one attempted, plus a count of unsporting behaviour. Paredes is charged with three counts of assault, while Almada is cited for unsporting behaviour. Ayala faces one assault charge.

For Spain, Gavi is cited for unsporting behaviour.

The accused parties will have the opportunity to present their case before the Disciplinary Committee issues a decision at a later date.
