FIFA opens disciplinary case against Argentina over discrimination and post-final clashes | OneFootball

FIFA announced on Wednesday that it has opened disciplinary proceedings against the Argentine Football Association and three Albiceleste players, including Leandro Paredes, following incidents after the World Cup final defeat by Spain.

The case lists four potential breaches, the use of a sporting event for non-sporting demonstrations, improper team conduct, discrimination including a racist incident, and order and security at matches. The statement cited discriminatory chants and gestures, delayed kick-offs, the display of inappropriate messages by the team and supporters, and objects thrown by fans at several games.

Argentina’s conduct during the tournament, where they were defending their 2022 crown, drew widespread scrutiny. FIFA had already moved to examine the on-pitch display of a banner stating that the Malvinas are Argentine after the semi-final win over England. The islands, known in English as the Falkland Islands and around 600 km from Argentina’s coast, remain a sensitive issue between London and Buenos Aires.

In a separate case, proceedings also cover Paredes, Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada, assistant coach Roberto Ayala, and Spain midfielder Gavi, over violence that followed the final Spain won. Several Argentina players and staff confronted their Spanish counterparts at the final whistle.

Paredes is accused of throwing Eric Garcia to the ground, grabbing him by the throat, then confronting Gavi, and faces three charges, the most of any player named. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente condemned the Argentines’ behaviour as unacceptable. Those involved can now set out their position, with a decision to follow in due course.
