FIFA rates Laporte third in World Cup defensive list

Aymeric Laporte has been rated the third-best performer for defensive work at the World Cup group stage.

According to El Correo, FIFA compiled a ranking of individual displays across the group phase, placing the Spain centre-back in the top three.

Laporte received a score of 7.24 after the first three matches. Only Derek Cornelius, 7.3, and his team-mate Rodri, 7.29, rank higher. The list also includes defensively minded midfielders, among them Rodri of Manchester City and Casemiro.

Notably, Lionel Messi, the tournament’s top scorer, does not lead the attacking ranking. Instead, Germany’s Deniz Undav of Stuttgart, aged 29, tops that list.

Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland and Vinícius are also behind Undav, who has three goals and two assists at this World Cup.
