Who is playing today? 👀

Switzerland will be big favourites when they take on Qatar given the respective form of the two sides and Murat Yakin's hopes of a strong tournament following a penalty shootout exit at the quarter-final stage of EURO 2024.

The Swiss have a strong core, including Inter defender Manual Akanji, but don't count out the Qataris who, in Akram Afif, boast one of the most experienced players at the tournament.

This Group B clash will take place at San Francisco's Levi's Stadium, home of the city's NFL franchise, the 49ers.

As has been the case for much of his Switzerland career, it's hard to look past Granit Xhaka

The record cap holder with 145 to his name heading into the tournament, Xhaka is both the leader in terms of the armband and his influence on the pitch.

At 33, he is getting better and better with age having enjoyed a brilliant debut season with Sunderland

If the Swiss are to make noise at this World Cup, there is little doubt Xhaka will be at the heart of it.

If there's one Qatar star to keep an eye on though, it's Almoez Ali. He's their all-time leading scorer and a proven tournament striker who can punish teams if given space in the box

Fun facts 📊

  • This is just the second meeting between the two countries, with their first coming in November 2018 when Akram Afif's goal sealed a shock win for Qatar, who were then 88 places below the Swiss in the world rankings
  •  Set-pieces accounted for 41% of Qatar's goals in qualification, the highest proportion of any team in the AFC section
  • Along with France, Switzerland are one of only two European nations to reach the knockout stage in each of the last six major international tournaments

Our prediction 🔮

  1. Qatar 0-2 Switzerland
