UEFA has cancelled this year's Finalissima between Argentina and Spain after the 27 March fixture in Qatar was called off because of the region's political situation, with no compatible venue or date available to reschedule.

Alternative solutions were explored in sequence, including staging the game at the Santiago Bernabéu on the original date with a 50 percent split of supporters, a two-leg series with a return in Buenos Aires before Euro 2028 and Copa América 2028, and switching to a neutral European venue on 27 or 30 March. None gained agreement from all parties.

The AFA, backed by CONMEBOL, proposed playing on 31 March at Rome's Stadio Olimpico and had earlier suggested a date after the World Cup, but Spain had no availability. The 31 March plan was not approved.

The Finalissima was established by UEFA and CONMEBOL to pit the champions of Europe and South America against each other. Argentina lifted the trophy in 2022 after beating Italy 3-0 at Wembley, and also won it in 1993 with Diego Maradona against Denmark.

Organisers expressed disappointment at the outcome and thanked Qatar's authorities and local organisers for their efforts to stage the event.
