For several weeks, Bernardo Silva appeared to be one of FC Barcelona’s priority targets for the 2026/27 season.

The Portuguese midfielder came close to becoming the club’s second signing after Anthony Gordon, with a preliminary agreement in place between the player and Barça.

However, the deal ultimately collapsed. While nobody at the club questioned Bernardo’s quality, Barcelona decided not to engage in a bidding war once interest from other clubs intensified, with the 31-year-old opting to sign for Real Madrid instead.

Now, according to SPORT, Barcelona’s decision was driven by a combination of sporting, financial and strategic considerations. Here are five reasons why the La Liga champions decided against a move for Bernardo.

1. The attacking midfield role was already covered

The primary reason was sporting. Hansi Flick made it clear that any arrival in midfield would need to be balanced by departures.

Bernardo’s preferred role has increasingly become that of an attacking midfielder, a position where Barcelona already possess strong options.

Fermin Lopez and Dani Olmo have both established themselves as reliable performers. Elsewhere on the pitch, opportunities would also have been limited.

On the right wing, Lamine Yamal remains untouchable, while the deeper midfield positions are occupied by Pedri, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, Marc Bernal and Marc Casado. Simply put, Barcelona could not guarantee Bernardo a starring role.

2. Flick wants new leaders to emerge naturally

Another factor was the evolution of the dressing room. Flick has repeatedly spoken about the need for more leadership within the squad, particularly following the influence previously provided by figures such as Inigo Martinez.

However, his vision is not centred on importing leaders from elsewhere. Instead, he wants existing players to assume greater responsibility.

Raphinha, Eric Garcia, and Lamine Yamal have already become more vocal figures, while younger stars such as Pau Cubarsi and Pedri have publicly expressed their desire to take on leadership roles.

Barcelona’s coaching staff believe the foundations already exist within the squad and do not necessarily require an external figure to fill that void.

3. The financial cost was significant

Although Bernardo would have arrived as a free agent, the operation was far from inexpensive.

Barcelona had a two-year agreement in principle with Bernardo’s camp but were unwilling to improve the terms once competition for his signature increased.

The club also had to consider Financial Fair Play restrictions. Even under improved economic conditions, registering another high earner would likely have required additional player sales. For Barcelona, the financial commitment no longer matched the sporting necessity.

4. Doubts about the player’s commitment

One of the decisive moments came when Bernardo publicly discussed his future during Portugal’s international camp.

Rather than strongly endorsing a move to Barcelona, he suggested he would join the club where he felt genuinely wanted. Those comments did not go down well within the Barcelona hierarchy.

The club has long embraced a philosophy associated with Johan Cruyff: players should be fully convinced about joining Barcelona. Bernardo’s enthusiasm helped initiate negotiations, but his hesitation ultimately weakened the club’s interest.

5. Protecting dressing-room harmony

Perhaps the most important factor was preserving the balance within the squad.

Deco and the sporting department have repeatedly stressed that one of Barcelona’s greatest strengths is the unity within the dressing room. The current group is viewed as highly connected, with strong chemistry both on and off the pitch.

Bernardo himself was never seen as a disruptive personality. However, committing significant resources to a 31-year-old player in a position that was already well covered could have created unnecessary tensions regarding roles, salaries and expectations.

For Flick, maintaining harmony within the group remains a top priority.
