Each team plays everyone twice, six matches apiece, and the bottom of that table is relegated to Série A2.

After the second round of the Taça Guanabara, Flamengo had the worst campaign despite one game more than most rivals. They are sixth in Group B and 12th overall.

The club chose to start with the under-20s, as the senior side ended their season on 17 December after losing the Intercontinental final on penalties to PSG.

In this first phase they still face Vasco on 21 January, Fluminense on 25 January and Sampaio Corrêa on 7 February.
