Flamengo confirm first team and Filipe Luís to face Vasco in Carioca | OneFootball

Flamengo will field their first team, led by Filipe Luís, in Wednesday’s Campeonato Carioca clássico against Vasco. The club said in a statement that, after a meeting at CT George Helal on Tuesday 20 with president Luiz Eduardo Baptista and football director José Boto, the professional squad will represent the team. Flamengo are at risk of relegation in the state competition.

Filipe will select the squad list, and there could be a blend with academy players who have been featuring.

Kick-off is 21:30, Brasília time, at the Maracanã. Both the under-20s and the seniors had afternoon sessions scheduled at Ninho do Urubu.

There had been pressure from Gávea for the football department to change course and field a stronger side. There was also doubt over who would lead the team, Bruno Pivetti or Filipe Luís.

The main group trained twice on Monday and had been set for a full-day programme on Wednesday. The staff are ramping up for the Brasileiro opener on 28 against São Paulo at Morumbis, while the primary focus is the Supercopa on one February against Corinthians in Brasília.

This year’s Carioca is split into two groups of six, with the bottom two in each section entering a relegation quadrangular played home and away, six matches per team. The worst side goes down to Série A2, and Flamengo have one point, bottom of Group B.
