Flamengo have renewed their criticism of Uruguay’s national team over Giorgian De Arrascaeta’s recovery, after the playmaker sustained a new calf injury following his return to international duty.
The club said in a statement that he was released on 18 May to continue rehabilitation from a fractured right clavicle under Uruguay’s staff, and that recovery protocols sent by Flamengo were not followed, which it said risked the player’s health and the club’s investment.
Flamengo added that, to align medical and physical monitoring, it authorised physiotherapist Laniyan Neves to join Uruguay’s backroom team during the FIFA World Cup 2026 to support the player and safeguard his return to club action.
Arrascaeta broke his right collarbone against Estudiantes in the Libertadores, underwent surgery, then joined Uruguay to continue treatment aimed at the World Cup.
The club wished their number 10 a swift recovery and said it expects pre-agreed protocols between club and country to be respected in future cases.
Elsewhere, 10 Flamengo players have been called up for the World Cup, including Danilo, Alex Sandro, Léo Pereira and Paquetá with Brazil, Plata with Ecuador, Carrascal with Colombia, and Arrascaeta, De La Cruz and Varela with Uruguay. Goalkeeper Léo Nannetti from the under-20s was also called by Carlo Ancelotti to train with Alisson, Ederson and Weverton.
