Flamengo are the Brazilian club with the most players in Carlo Ancelotti’s 26-man Brazil squad for the upcoming World Cup, with Alex Sandro, Danilo, Léo Pereira and Lucas Paquetá named on Monday. According to Globo.com, it is the largest contingent from a Brazilian team at a World Cup since São Paulo in 1994.

Back in 1994, São Paulo supplied Zetti, Cafu, Leonardo and Muller. Since then, foreign clubs have also had four Brazil representatives, notably Real Madrid in 2006 and Manchester City in 2018.

In 1998 Flamengo, São Paulo, Botafogo and Atlético-MG had two apiece. In 2002 São Paulo and Corinthians had three. In 2010 Cruzeiro, Flamengo and Santos had one each.

Three Flamengo players were on Ancelotti’s long list but missed the final cut, Léo Ortiz, Samuel Lino and Pedro. The notable inclusion is Neymar, the Santos forward, who will contest his fourth World Cup. It is his first call-up under Ancelotti.

The list was unveiled at the Museu do Amanhã in central Rio de Janeiro, attended by former players and officials. More than 600 media professionals covered the event, including journalists from 13 countries.

The squad will begin reporting on Wednesday 27 at Granja Comary in Teresópolis to start preparation. The last arrivals will be those involved in the Champions League final, PSG v Arsenal on 30 May in Budapest, Hungary.
