According to Coluna Do Fla, with the Brasileirão paused for the World Cup, Flamengo and fellow Libra clubs plan to reopen talks with Globo to address a gap in their deal that leaves a R$ 100 million shortfall.
Flamengo president Luiz Eduardo Baptista, known as Bap, will head the talks after Palmeiras left the group. The process is unlikely to be simple, as the broadcaster has signalled it does not share the clubs’ interpretation of the contract.
The issue stems from the original Libra agreement with Globo, which did not provide an uplift if the number of bloc clubs in Série A increased. With Remo’s promotion, the contingent rose from nine to 10.
Globo therefore received 19 additional matches to air without paying more. With the overall pot unchanged, the money was split among more teams, an outcome that could cost around R$ 10 million per club, including Flamengo.
Flamengo’s main argument is parity with Liga Forte União, whose contract contains a clause that raises payments if team numbers grow. Clubs have invoked that mechanism to try to offset the financial hit.
Palmeiras’ exit was presented as unrelated to friction with Flamengo, and instead linked to what it viewed as time wasted within Libra.
