The Copa Libertadores match between Independiente Medellin and Flamengo was halted shortly after kick-off on Thursday night in Colombia. Flares and other projectiles were thrown onto the pitch, and both teams were sent back to the dressing rooms before the referee stopped play with Conmebol’s approval.
According to L'Équipe, local media reported that Independiente supporters were protesting against the club’s hierarchy after a sequence of poor results.
Flamengo sporting director José Boto said the reigning champions expected to be awarded the victory and the three points.
He argued the situation was not Flamengo’s responsibility, said the regulations were clear and that the home side had failed to guarantee security.
The Rio club lead Group A, ahead of Estudiantes of Argentina and Independiente Medellin, who could face heavy sanctions.
