Barcelona closed out 2025 in the best possible way, with a controlled and mature 2-0 victory over Villarreal that leaves them sitting proudly at the top of the La Liga table.
It was not the most spectacular performance of the season, but it was one that carried weight, meaning, and authority — and that was not lost on head coach Hansi Flick.
Speaking after the match, the coach made it clear that this win was about much more than just three points.
Reflecting on the overall performance and the significance of ending the year as league leaders, Flick could not hide his satisfaction.
“The mentality, the attitude, it’s incredible. I’m very proud. That’s all I can say. It’s a fantastic end to the year,” he began saying.
One of the standout figures on the night was goalkeeper Joan Garcia, who produced a series of key saves to keep Barcelona in control during tricky moments.

Flick was keen to recognise his contribution, while also reinforcing the importance of the collective effort. He explained,
“He saved us many times today. He’s an important player for us. But we’re a team. We all defend with and without the ball.
“Today we were a bit tired, and we missed some passes.”
The match also carried a hostile atmosphere for Lamine Yamal, who was repeatedly booed after drawing a red card from Renato Veiga.
Flick offered calm guidance on how the young star should respond to such pressure, insisting the decision was justified. He stated that the red card “was clear.”
He then added, “Lamine has to know how to handle it. He scored the second goal, which is the best response.”
There was mild concern late on when Jules Kounde was forced off, but Flick was quick to downplay fears of a serious issue.

Providing context, he revealed, “He’s been ill for three or four days. He had some problems.
“He told me he would try to give his best. He felt a cramp. We will check it out when we get back to Barcelona.”
Attention also turned to Andreas Christensen, who was absent and will miss the next phase of the competition.
Asked about potential reinforcements in January, Flick kept his options open, confirming, “I will talk to Deco on Monday.”
However, his focus remained firmly on supporting the defender, adding, “The first thing is for Andreas to come back well. We have to support him.
“He was in good form. He played well in the Cup and performed well in training.
“It’s sad. I can only say that I wish him all the best and hope he comes back as soon as possible.”
Flick later returned to the broader picture, once again stressing what mattered most on the night.
“What I like most about the game are the three points. Joan saved us and kept a clean sheet.
“My team is a little tired. In the end, there aren’t many options. But the team’s mentality is incredible. I’m proud,” he concluded.
