With safety virtually secured, director of football Florent Ghisolfi’s first two windows have shaped Sunderland’s impressive Premier League return. According to Sunderland Echo, Kristjaan Speakman’s exit last month underlined Ghisolfi’s central role. Seventeen additions are rated here, with two perfect 10s and one 3.
Granit Xhaka and Robin Roefs scored 10/10. Xhaka’s leadership and tempo-setting passes have been generational for Sunderland, while Roefs’ shot-stopping and composure have been revelatory. Nordi Mukiele and Noah Sadiki earned 9.5, with Omar Alderete and Brian Brobbey at 9.
Reinildo was an 8, excellent when fit. Chemsdine Talbi, Lutsharel Geertruida and Melker Ellborg rated 7.5. Habib Diarra, Nilson Angulo and Bertrand Traoré received 7, with injuries, AFCON and adaptation limiting consistency.
Simon Adingra and Marc Guiu were 5, the former struggling to fit Le Bris’s off-ball demands, the latter recalled before he could settle. Arthur Masuaku rated 3 after limited minutes. Jocelin Ta Bi is unrated, and Enzo Le Fée is excluded as his deal predated Ghisolfi’s arrival.
Many summer targets were tracked pre-promotion, and Ghisolfi used European contacts to blend youthful upside with top-level experience. Arriving in June, he quickly grasped Le Bris’s identity and the league’s demands, building a side with resilience and potential resale value.
Sunderland cannot spend as heavily again, so the task is to add young talent without eroding the solidity that underpinned this season. Those windows were delivered with the existing recruitment team. From summer Ghisolfi’s structure takes over, so markets and strategy might evolve. His start has been exceptional.
