Matty Young has completed a loan move to Huddersfield Town, giving the Sunderland goalkeeper his first shot at League One football.
Sunderland Echo reports that the 19-year-old made well over 50 senior appearances across two seasons with Salford City, who missed promotion on the final day before losing to Notts County in the play-offs.
Shortly before the play-off final, Young signed a long-term contract on Wearside running to the summer of 2030. A youth international, he is widely regarded as one of the club’s brightest prospects, and director of football Florent Ghisolfi called the step up a crucial stage in his development.
Ghisolfi credited Sunderland’s goalkeeping department for Young’s progress, said the club are excited to see him make further strides at Huddersfield next season, and wished both player and Town well for the 2026/27 campaign.
Huddersfield director of football Chris Markham said the club are thankful to Sunderland for entrusting them with the next step. He described Young as among the country’s most highly rated young goalkeepers, highlighted his club and international experience for his age, and praised his attitude and desire to improve.
Head coach Martin Drury said it was clear why Young is so highly regarded after extensive scouting. He pointed to the goalkeeper’s character and hunger, noted his desire to come and play for Town, and said he will work closely with Head of Goalkeeping Chris Elliott at Canalside to make a positive contribution next season.
