Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has delivered a powerful message at the General Assembly, announcing a multi-million euro lawsuit against UEFA over the controversial Super League project.

The club is seeking nearly €4.5 billion in damages, citing lost profits and reputational harm as the main reasons for the legal action.

Perez underlined the significance of the Super League and the club’s stance against UEFA’s longstanding monopoly. He stated,

“The Super League is essential. We have brought down a monopoly regime that lasted more than 60 years in record time.

“In 2021, UEFA threatened to expel clubs. And they opened disciplinary proceedings to expel us from the Champions League. Today, with devastating rulings, the situation is radically different.

“In the face of these rulings, La Liga and UEFA are downplaying the importance.

“They are focusing on peace. They think we are fools. They agreed with us on 21 of the 23 points and paid the costs,” said the Real Madrid president (h/t AS).

Explaining the legal route

Emphasising that Real Madrid is acting in the club’s long-term interest, Perez added context to their legal strategy. He explained,

“No one can sanction us for working for our future. The forcefulness allows us to claim damages from UEFA for the harm they have caused us.

“We have claimed the process against UEFA. To be compensated and to organise the competition in the future. We have not come here to win a ruling, but to put it into practice.

“UEFA has urged us to go to the ECA. But the ECA requires us to waive any litigation against UEFA. That would potentially mean giving up billions of euros that we are going to claim.”

Perez also emphasised the wider benefits of the Super League for football clubs across Europe and reflected on the legal victories achieved so far. He said,

“We have won the legal battle, and we will win the next battles. Because it is the best project for all clubs. And they all recognise this in private,” he said.
