Florentino Pérez will lead Real Madrid until June 2030 after taking 65% of members’ votes. His snap election caught a budding opposition off guard, yet 35% backed Enrique Riquelme, who vows to resist any privatisation push. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, Pérez now faces a demanding in-tray.
Top of it is a marquee signing. He had flagged a record €150 million bid on Tuesday, but targets have proved elusive. Attempts for PSG’s Joao Neves and Vitinha went nowhere, and subsequent moves for Michael Olise and Atlético’s Argentine forward Julián Álvarez also stalled.
Pérez has turned back to José Mourinho, the coach he has long favoured, to impose order on a wayward dressing room. Madrid have added Dumfies and Konaté and aim to trim, with sales and loans considered and midfield reinforcements targeted, including Rodrigo Hernández.
Basketball’s reset misfired. Despite a record €55 million budget, an injury to Tavares preceded defeat to Olympiacos in the EuroLeague final and an ACB quarter-final exit to La Laguna Tenerife. Pérez must decide on Sergio Scariolo after the first trophyless season in 15 years.
The women’s side, built to sit behind Barcelona, has lost leaders including Olga Carmona and Teresa Abelleira, leaving strategy under review. Off the pitch, liquidity strains from the Bernabéu rebuild have prompted plans for a parallel company to admit two foreign investors injecting €500 million each, with Bernard Arnault and Sixth Street indicated, though Riquelme’s opposition means two thirds of an extraordinary assembly are still required.
