Pat Nevin has always had a soft spot for Billy Gilmour, as a Scottish former Chelsea player. And this week his comments on the youngster will be enough to really frustrate a lot of Blues fans.
Speaking in quotes picked up by Football 365, Nevin made some big claims:
“He’s got the technical ability to do huge things in football. He holds the ball as well as any other player,” Nevin said.
“If the next move he gets is way up the ladder, I won’t be surprised. The only thing holding him back, and the only reason he’s not moving anywhere for £100 million, is because he doesn’t create and score goals. He is world class at all other parts of the game, but that extra bit is what stops him getting that move.
In terms of “moves up the ladder,” Nevin mentions both Manchester City and Arsenal as potential destinations, citing former Chelsea players Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic as players in a similar style who have moved on from Stamford Bridge and had big success.
He’s still working on proving himself at Napoli, but it’s the sort of move that could catapult him to the top if it goes well.
There are few players whose treatment at Chelsea has frustrated us as much as Billy.
First given his shot under Frank Lampard, the youngster shone every time he was given a chance – yet successive managers failed to give him those chances. They all preferred the safe route of using a veteran and protecting their jobs to developing an genuinely exceptional young talent.
Just think of all the money we could have saved in midfield had Billy been used properly? Watching him play for Arsenal or Man City in the future would only compound the pain.
