Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas, former president of Congo’s football federation, Fecofoot, has been handed a life sentence for embezzling FIFA funding. He is 63.

According to L'Équipe, the criminal court in Brazzaville on Tuesday found him guilty of money laundering, forgery and use of forged documents, and embezzlement.

He did not attend the hearing. Several associates, including his son Lionel Mayolas, also received life terms. Fecofoot’s secretary general Badji Mombo Wantete and treasurer Raoul Kanda were each jailed for five years.

The misappropriation totals €1.1 million from FIFA allocations to Fecofoot. It includes a 2020 grant request for women’s football worth $500,000, about €429,000, under FIFA’s Covid-19 relief programme. Promised projects, such as launching leagues and improving sports infrastructure, were not delivered.

The federation had already faced trouble when FIFA suspended it in 2025 for interference, following Mayolas’s dismissal by the Congolese government in September 2024.
