Former Manchester City interim boss Nick Cushing has been appointed as the head coach of American National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) expansion team Denver Summit.

Summit announced the news via a post on their official club website this evening.

The 40-year-old becomes Denver Summit’s first-ever head coach and he will prepare the club for their NWSL debut in 2026.

Cushing returns to the United States after spending a period as interim head coach at Manchester City. He returned to The Joie Stadium following former boss Gareth Taylor’s sacking in March. Cushing won four of his 10 games in charge in all competitions.

The Chester-born coach initially took charge of Manchester City between 2013 and 2020. Cushing helped The Cityzens enjoy a hugely successful period which saw them win the Barclays Women’s Super League title, one Adobe Women’s FA Cup and three Subway Women’s League Cups. Manchester City were also UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-finalists on a couple of occasions.

Cushing now returns to America, nine months on from being sacked by New York City FC after spending two years as their head coach.

After being appointed Denver Summit head coach, Cushing said “Denver Summit FC’s commitment to building a world-class soccer organization really inspired me. We have a passionate, committed fanbase and we have to put a team on the field that replicates that. Our team will play an attacking form of the game that excites our stadium and makes things difficult for our opponents. We want to create a winning team as well as a great experience for all of Colorado.”

Cushing’s appointment comes just days after Denver Summit officially launched their club name, crest and colours to their new supporters.
