Former Real Madrid and Man United coach Carlos Queiroz appointed as Ghana boss | OneFootball

Ghana have confirmed the appointment of Carlos Queiroz as their new head coach.

He replaces Otto Addo, who was sacked last month after a poor run of form.

Queiroz has now been tasked with leading the Black Stars to the World Cup. They have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

The 73-year-old took Portugal to the last 16 stage of the 2010 edition and was in charge of Iran for the past three tournaments.

Queiroz started his coaching career with Portugal U20 in 1989, before his promotion to the senior side two years later.

His biggest job came in 2003 when he was appointed as Real Madrid manager, either side of spells as Manchester United assistant coach.

Queiroz is familiar with African football, having guided Egypt to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations final, where they lost to Senegal. He was also in charge of South Africa for two years.

The Portuguese coach is known for his pragmatism, which could bode well for Ghana as they prepare for the World Cup.

They have not progressed beyond the group stage since reaching the quarter-finals in 2010, where they lost to Uruguay.

Queiroz has two games to prepare Ghana for the World Cup – a friendly against Mexico on May 22 and Wales on June 2.
