Former Real Madrid & Everton winger Royston Drenthe has been hospitalised after suffering stroke according to official announcement from FC De Rebellen, the Dutch football events company he currently represents.

The 38 year old former Netherlands international was admitted to hospital on Friday where he remains under medical care.

FC De Rebellen confirmed the news in statement asking media & fans to respect the privacy of Drenthe and his family during this difficult time.

"Last Friday, Royston Drenthe suffered stroke. He's currently receiving good care and is in good hands, we hope for full and speedy recovery"

A Career Across Europe

Drenthe began his professional career with Feyenoord before earning high profile move to Real Madrid in 2007 where he won La Liga.

He later enjoyed spells with Everton (on loan in 2011 /12) Reading and Sheffield Wednesday in England before retiring from professional football in 2023.

Following his retirement, Drenthe joined FC De Rebellen, organisation that brings together former professionals for exhibition matches, events and public speaking engagements.

Football world reacts

The news has prompted an outpouring of support from the football community. Everton posted on X:

"Everyone at Everton wishes Royston Drenthe full and speedy return to full health after reports he’s been taken to hospital'

Drenthe made over 400 professional appearance during his career and was part of the Netherlands golden generation of youth footballers winning the UEFA U21 Championship in 2007 before earning senior international caps.
