Benfica still regard José Mourinho as their leading option for next season, but are lining up Marco Silva as an alternative, with the former Sporting coach preferred if Mourinho moves to Real Madrid.

Director-general Mário Branco is among the key advocates, having worked with Silva at Estoril. Their past link, together with the coach’s deep knowledge of Portuguese football, underpins confidence in a potential move.

At 48, Silva is at the end of his contract at Fulham and indications are he will leave the London club, currently 10th in the Premier League. He is preparing to close a five-season spell in England, where he has consolidated his reputation.

His name has also been linked with Chelsea, and remaining at Fulham is not in his plans.

His English career has also taken in Hull City, Watford and Everton. In Portugal, his high point came with Sporting, lifting the Taça de Portugal, after earlier impressing at Estoril Praia alongside Mário Branco when the club reached European competition.
