Sunderland host Roberto De Zerbi’s Spurs at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, 2pm kick-off, after a three-week break, with Régis Le Bris weighing key selection calls amid injuries.
According to Sunderland Echo, the head coach will provide a fitness update at his Friday press conference, so this is an early view of how the XI and bench could shape up.
Goalkeeper: Robin Roefs. His hamstring issue last month was not thought serious, and the interval could be enough for a return. Melker Ellborg has handled the pressure well in his absence.
Right-back: Nordi Mukiele. He made the bench for the Tyne-Wear derby as Sunderland took a cautious approach. Extra recovery and training should allow a bigger role, though Geertruida and Hume give Le Bris strong alternatives, so there is no need to rush.
Centre-back: Luke O’Nien. Sunderland hope Dan Ballard may be over his hamstring problem a month on from the Brighton game, but Mukiele’s availability removes the need to gamble. Le Bris could use Mukiele centrally, yet O’Nien made a compelling case with an impressive second half at Newcastle.
Centre-back: Omar Alderete. After a brief dip around the turn of the year, he has hit top form again in recent weeks. He has been pivotal to important results during a challenging spell for injuries.
