Eintracht rounded out their ADIDAS U.S. TOUR with a 2-2 draw against Philadelphia Union.
The Eagles enjoyed a perfect start to the match at the beautiful Subaru Park, located along the Delaware River and by the Commodore Barry Bridge. A corner by Farès Chaibi was flicked on by Rasmus Kristensen to the far post, where Jonny Burkardt popped up to nudge the ball over the line (3’).
The home side, who currently sit top of the Major League Soccer (MLS) Eastern Conference after 25 rounds of matches, subsequently threatened twice down the right wing but a vigilant Eintracht rearguard prevented them from playing the killer pass each time.
The 16,218 fans in attendance were treated to an entertaining and evenly balanced first half, with Burkardt denied his second of the game by a fine Andre Blake save (11’) before Mikael Uhre missed the chance to equalise when he fired wide from the edge of the area (14’), and team-mate Quinn Sullivan struck the frame of the goal (18’).
Philadelphia - coached by Bradley Carnell, who laced his boots for Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Gladbach and Hansa Rostock, among others, during his playing days – levelled the score just before half-time when Baden-Württemberg native Kai Wagner’s corner was headed in by Bruno Damiani (41’). USA international Paxten Aaronson was brought on for the second half, much to the delight of the crowd, who greeted his arrival with warm applause. The game lacked the same intensity as the first half initially – until Chaibi played a ball for Elye Wahi to chase on the hour-mark. The French forward maintained his composure in front of goal and put Eintracht 2-1 up with a low finish into the net.
Aaronson (67’) and Jean‑Mattéo Bahoya (69’) both had opportunities to extend the Eagles’ lead, but neither was able to hit the target. They were made to rue those misses a short while later when Chris Donovan took the ball around Jens Grahl and slotted in the equaliser for the MLS side (72’). Eintracht pushed for a winner in the closing stages but there were no more goals as the game ended 2-2.
Head coach Dino Toppmöller: “We were able to implement a lot of the things we’ve worked on in training. We did some things really well. We can still be more aggressive in our pressing, even if we did win the ball back quite a few times today. That said, we didn’t take advantage of those situations and our finishing was an issue. We could and should have scored three or four more goals. But one positive was that the boys pushed themselves to their limit again. Now we’re looking forward to flying home and having two days off.”
