Vivianne Miedema and Mary Fowler’s strikes in City’s victory over Aston Villa have been nominated for January’s Barclays Women’s Super League Goal of the Month.
Both efforts helped Gareth Taylor’s side to a 4-2 success at Villa Park as we closed last month with three vital points on the road.
Miedema, who is also shortlisted for the division’s Player of the Month award, receives this nomination for her phenomenal second goal of the afternoon which handed the visitors the lead.
Shortly after the Netherlands international had equalised for the Blues, she flipped the fixture on its head with a wonderful effort from all of 25-yards out.
After collecting the ball with her back to goal, she spun her marker – allowing her to benefit from the space created to whip a vicious, unstoppable effort into the top corner past Sabrina D’Angelo.
That gave City a well-deserved lead at half-time, but the hosts equalised shortly after the interval, meaning we’d have to battle again to regain the lead.
And Fowler’s standout strike in January restored that advantage when she drove to the left-hand-side of the box before standing up her opposite number.
From the position she showed great feet to cut onto her left and send a fizzing strike dipping past D’Angelo via a deflection.
City’s duo are up against Liverpool’s Olivia Smith, Everton’s Veatriki Sarri, Chelsea’s Catarina Macario and Aggie Beaver-Jones and Spurs’ Olivia Holdt.
Voting closes on Monday 3 February at 11:00 (UK) – choose Miedema or Fowler for Goal of the Month here.
