France could go top of the FIFA rankings on Tuesday night if Spain do not beat Egypt in a friendly in Barcelona.
They climbed to second after a 2-1 win over Brazil on Thursday, then defeated Colombia 3-1 on Sunday to complete their American tour with two victories. According to L'Équipe, France are virtually 1.8 points off the summit, with the official ranking to be updated on Wednesday, the day after the international break ends.
FIFA points are calculated by match importance, the result and the strength of the opponent, so friendlies carry less weight than major tournaments.
Leaders Spain face 29th-ranked Egypt at Espanyol's stadium on Tuesday at 21:00. A draw or defeat would see them shed enough points to slip below France.
The current top 10, with points, reads, 1 Spain 1,879.12, 2 France 1,877.32, 3 Argentina 1,873.96, 4 England 1,832.62, 5 Portugal 1,759.62. Then 6 Netherlands 1,759.42, 7 Brazil 1,756.49, 8 Morocco 1,753.07, 9 Belgium 1,735.24, 10 Germany 1,728.49.
