Inter booked their place in the Champions League round of sixteen yesterday.

The Nerazzurri did so in emphatic fashion. They beat Monaco 3-0 to qualify directly for the knockouts.

A draw would have actually sufficed for Inter to avoid a playoff round in February.

However, the Nerazzurri were hardly in any mood to play for the result.

Inter won, clinching their place in fourth spot in the Champions League table. That sends a big message that they are among the teams with a realistic chance of winning the competition.

Inter’s win yesterday means that Liverpool are the only team to have taken more points in the Champions League “league phase” this season.

“That means that we’ve done well in the Champions League, said Inter striker Marcus Thuram. “We’ve stayed focused.”

“Matches in cup competitions are always tough. but we’ve played them with huge confidence.”

“On the pitch it’s hard to see ourselves from outside, but we started well,” Marcus Thuram added of yesterday’s win over Monaco.

“We knew that it was an important match. We wanted to start strongly.”

“Now we’ll wait for the draw to see who we play next,” the Frenchman added.

“It’ll certainly be a difficult match. Let’s see who we get.”
