The World Cup quarter-final between France and Morocco spilled into the National Assembly on Thursday night, with MPs tracking the action during a debate. According to L'Équipe, some followed the game on their phones, prompting light-hearted interruptions.

As France secured victory to reach the semi-finals, deputies continued work on a bill, eventually adopting measures aimed at curbing the misuse of nitrous oxide among young people.

Early on, Gabriel Attal put his head in his hands after Kylian Mbappé had a penalty saved by Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

About an hour later, presiding officer Marie-Agnès Poussier-Winsback noted rising noise, and rapporteur Xavier Albertini said Mbappé had just scored a spectacular goal, before returning to the amendments.

When Ousmane Dembélé added the second, Sophia Chikirou argued it was impossible to hold a sitting during a football match, struggling to be heard amid the celebrations. Albertini confirmed the goal for the record.

Around midnight, fresh applause broke out between votes. Poussier-Winsback announced the 2-0 result for those not watching, then lifted the sitting minutes later.
