France’s 1998 World Cup triumph is being lined up for a stage musical, with first performances targeted for 2028 to mark 30 years.
The project is being developed by producer Farid Benlagha Le Hazif, who staged La Haine, and is provisionally titled "1998, notre plus belle histoire". “A little more mainstream, a little more feelgood, a little more accessible,” he said, speaking to Le Parisien.
He does not intend to recount the sporting saga in detail, with matches serving as a backdrop to tell “what France was”.
“We showed we were capable of being happy together, whatever our origins, colours or religions. None of that mattered, and does not matter, because in the end we must be a country that lives happily with its differences.”
He has contacted several of the 1998 finalists, who were enthusiastic about taking part. Musically, it will be hard to avoid Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive”, and he said he could call on Kool Shen or JoeyStarr of NTM to help create the score.
