It was a nightmare week for France’s clubs in Europe. Two of Ligue 1’s clubs lost in the UEFA Champions League. Paris Saint-Germain lost against Bayern Munich, registering their first defeat of the current UCL campaign, on Tuesday. The next night, Olympique de Marseille lost against Atalanta. AS Monaco register Ligue 1’s only UCL of the gameweek, beating Bodo/Glimt 1-0.
The poor results continued on Thursday night. OGC Nice conceded their fourth straight UEFA Europa League defeat, losing to Freiburg 3-1; Le Gym have not won any of their last 16 European games. Lille OSC also lost, at the hands of Red Star Belgrade, whilst a weakened Olympique Lyonnais side were beaten by Real Betis. RC Strasbourg Alsace did at least get a win in the UEFA Europa Conference League, against Hacken.
It was, therefore, a gameweek to forget for French sides in Europe. However, no damage was done. The nearest nation to France in the UEFA coefficient index is the Netherlands, however, no Dutch sides won in Europe this week. As a result, France has actually increased the gap to the Eredivisie, which now stands at 7.786 points.
