Coventry City should address their goalkeeping department this summer, and Rangers' Jack Butland would be a coup if he joined.

Frank Lampard will be looking to build on an impressive start as Coventry City manager as he prepares for his first full season at the club.

The Chelsea legend succeeded Sky Blues favourite Mark Robins back in November, with the side just two points above the relegation zone.

However, a remarkable run saw Coventry reach the play-offs, although they fell short over two legs against Sunderland in heartbreaking fashion.

Coventry City must be ruthless in summer transfer window

The way they were eliminated in the play-offs will hurt for some time, but it shouldn’t detract from the outstanding work that Lampard has done since his appointment.

But, it’s now about taking that next step, and the boss has already started reshaping the squad, with Kaine Kesler-Hayden and Miguel Angel Brau through the door.

In truth, the Coventry squad looks strong, and there is decent depth across the pitch, so it’s not like they need a major overhaul.

Nevertheless, there are ways to improve, so Lampard and the recruitment team must be ruthless if opportunities arise to upgrade in any department.

Jack Butland would be a shrewd signing for Coventry City

So, it’s about adding quality over quantity, and Rangers’ Jack Butland would be an improvement on the keepers currently at the CBS Arena.

Oliver Dovin had been number one under Lampard, but an ACL injury in April meant he missed the run-in, and he will also miss a huge chunk of the upcoming season as well.

In his absence, Brad Collins initially played, but his inconsistent performances saw Lampard turn to Ben Wilson for the play-offs.

Both stoppers have proven themselves to be steady options in the Championship, but if Coventry want to win promotion, they should be targeting a keeper who can really make a difference - which Butland could do.

It’s worth pointing out that he hasn’t exactly been great for Rangers, as he lost his place to Liam Kelly under Barry Ferguson last season.

Despite that, the 32-year-old still has plenty of quality, and you would back Lampard to get the ex-Stoke man back to his best.

If he manages that, Coventry would have a formidable keeper by Championship standards. The former England international is a commanding presence in the box, capable of claiming high balls, and he is also able to pull off some superb saves due to his quick reflexes.

Butland also has a good temperament, and having played for his country, in the Premier League, and in Europe with Rangers, he has high level experience and can deal with pressure.

That know-how could be vital in a Coventry squad that lacks players of that ilk, and Lampard will recognise the importance of adding the right characters to the dressing room.

Jack Butland may fancy new challenge away from Rangers

If Coventry are to bring Butland in, now might be the ideal moment to strike.

With Russell Martin in place at Ibrox, it has been suggested that he could look for a new keeper, as we know he has specific demands when it comes to playing out from the back.

Rangers may welcome the chance to get a fee for a player and to shift someone who is surely a high earner, as it will give the new boss more money to work with as he looks to make his own signings. Plus, Kelly has shown himself to be a capable option if Butland isn’t around.

This summer is all about making a few tweaks that could make Coventry a real force in the promotion race once again, and prising Butland from Rangers would be a real statement of intent, as well as helping Lampard improve a critical position on the pitch.
