The Coventry City forward has started this season in excellent form
Coventry City have started the 2025/26 campaign in fine fashion.
Frank Lampard’s side suffered the cruel blow of play-off heartbreak last term, coming just minutes shy of a penalty shoot-out that could’ve handed them a shot at Premier League football.
That wasn’t to be, but the Sky Blues haven’t let it impact their performances during the opening stages of this season.
Coventry City have scored for fun thus far and lead the Championship’s goalscoring rankings after seven matches. This is partly due to a mammoth 7-1 victory over QPR, a performance that showed just how brilliantly Lampard’s attack is performing.
Although there is still plenty of football left to play, the supporter at the CBS Arena will already be dreaming of a potential return to the Premier League.
The Sky Blues sit second in the table after seven matches, four points shy of league leaders Middlesbrough and will feel confident that with their current attacking presence, they can maintain that position.
A number of operators have impressed for Coventry so far this season, such as Haji Wright, Victor Torp and Milan van Ewijk. These players may have been predicted to be some of Lampard’s best performers before the start of the campaign, due to their displays in the past.
However, there has been another star that has emerged within the Sky Blues’ ranks, who some may have been less quick to suggest during the summer.
Brandon Thomas-Asante signed for Coventry City in 2024, but didn’t enjoy a fantastic first term at the CBS Arena.
Scoring four league goals, the 26-year-old made just 14 starts in the Championship across the entirety of last season, with it looking like his £2.25 million move from West Brom was a waste of money.
However, the Ghanian has firmly silenced the doubters during the opening stages of the 2025/26 campaign, scoring three goals and providing two assists in seven second-tier matches.
Thomas-Asante looks to have found a new lease of life under Lampard and is playing with extreme confidence, which has directly led to increased output.
Quickly, all murmurs about the forward’s future at the CBS Arena have slowly turned into praise about how well he is performing.
Combining with the likes of Wright, Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Jack Rudoni, Thomas-Asante is playing a crucial role in the Championship’s most dangerous attack.
Coventry City have emerged as early contenders for a promotion push, with their lethal attack more than a match for most defences across the country.
Lampard proved last season that he is capable of taking the Sky Blues into the play-offs and will be hoping to go one better this term.
To achieve this task, he will have to rely on his best players to perform consistently over the course of 46 matches, especially in encounters where things aren’t going swimmingly and a moment of magic is required.
If Thomas-Asante can keep playing at his current level, he will be a crucial asset for Coventry City in their quest to achieve passage into the top-flight.
