Coventry City are eyeing a move for Aston Villa midfielder Ross Barkley, as they prepare for life in the Premier League in the 2026/27 season.

Coventry City capped off a memorable season, as they thrashed Watford 4-0 at Vicarage Road, in their final game before the Sky Blues head into the Premier League.

A stunning hat-trick from Ellis Simms and Victor Torp goal was more than enough to secure the three points for them, as they finished on 95 points in the Championship, and 11 points clear of second-placed Ipswich Town.

Frank Lampard's side have caught the eye for all the right reasons this term, and the club's supporters will be eagerly anticipating what comes next for them.

The Sky Blues are set for an interesting summer ahead, and reinforcements are likely to be added to their squad, as they look to retain their status as a Premier League club for the foreseeable future.

Despite Coventry's success this season, there isn't too much Premier League experience within their squad, and so Lampard is more than likely to look to add that to his team ahead of the 2026/27 league campaign.

Ross Barkley emerges as Coventry transfer target

Coventry City have reportedly set their sights on signing Aston Villa midfielder, Ross Barkley, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

Barkley has been with Aston Villa since 2024, having previously played for the likes of Everton, Chelsea, Nice, and Luton Town. The midfielder is out of contract at the end of the 2025/26 season, and it remains to be seen whether he'll sign a new deal with the club.

Aston Villa have the option to extend his stay at Villa Park for a further year, but it remains unclear whether they'll activate that option in the coming weeks.

Barkley has found regular game time hard to come by in Unai Emery's side this season, which is largely down to a knee injury that has kept him sidelined at various points in this year's campaign.

The 32-year-old has made 17 appearances in the Premier League for Villa this term, but the majority of those have been substitute appearances, which aren't ideal if he's looking to secure a long-term future with the club.

Barkley could be a shrewd signing for Coventry

Coventry are going to be need players that know the Premier League well, and Barkley fits that description perfectly. He's had his injury troubles this season, which will be of slight concern for the Sky Blues, but ultimately, if a deal was viable on a free transfer at the end of this year's campaign, it's worth a punt.

He's got real quality on the ball, and has scored some important goals for the likes of Aston Villa, Chelsea, and Everton in the top-flight, and Coventry supporters would be hoping he can do the same for them.

Barkley has got an important few weeks coming up, as he'll be fighting for his future at Aston Villa, but it seems as though the writing is already on the wall for the midfielder, as Unai Emery simply has better options available to him.

Coventry have some strong options in midfield, with Frank Onyeka's loan move becoming permanent this summer, whilst Matt Grimes, and Victor Torp have also played a key role in their promotion-winning campaign.

Barkley can also operate in the central attacking midfield role, and so the likes of Josh Eccles could have an uncertain future this summer, whilst Jack Rudoni will know that he'll face competition for his starting spot.

Competition for places is never a bad dilemma to have as a manager though, and Frank Lampard will be hoping to have a settled squad ahead of their Premier League opener in August.
