Noah Atubolu (23) is regarded as one of Germany’s best up and coming goalkeepers, and his save to deny Romano Schmid from the spot on Saturday afternoon marks a Bundesliga record – Freiburg’s No. 1 becomes the first goalkeeper to save five penalties in a row.
VAR intervened in the 57th minute after Jordy Makengo was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty area – a decision in which the referee agreed with. Schmid had scored twice already from the spot this season, but was denied by Atubolu.
“Atu’s penalty save was an incredibly important reason for the win,” said Freiburg head coach Julian Schuster after the final whistle. Following the departure of Mark Flekken to Brentford in 2023, Atubolu was named as Freiburg’s No. 1 at 21 years old. Backed then by Christian Streich and now Schuster, Atubolu is surely on the verge of a call-up to the German national team.
