Coventry City have had a bid in the region of between £3.5-£4 million accepted for Matt Grimes from Swansea City.
Coventry City had reportedly seen two bids rejected for Swansea City captain Matt Grimes, who remains a target for Frank Lampard, with a third bid now accepted by Luke Williams' side.
Coventry's pursuit of Grimes was first called by BBC Sport Wales, with a recent update from Tom Coleman of Wales Online further detailing a seemingly-impending switch to the CBS Arena following a decade of service for the Welsh side.
Grimes extended his contract until 2027 earlier this season, meaning Williams' side were in no rush to sanction a sale, but it's said the Swans captain would likely receive a "significant" pay rise should he complete a move to the West Midlands. That was if a move could materialise and a fee could be agreed.
It was revealed exclusively by Football League World yesterday that Swansea were demanding at least £3.5 million from Coventry to acquire Grimes' services. Now, Wales Online are reporting that a fee has been agreed in that region.
A crucial update from Wales Online yesterday detailed that Swansea are resigned to losing Grimes before the conclusion of the window, despite rejecting two bids, with Coventry growing in confidence of completing a deal.
Importantly, Grimes himself is said to be keen on the move and what will be a new challenge after being a mainstay at the Swansea.com Stadium for so many years.
Now, Wales Online's latest report states that the fee is likely to be between £3.5 million to £4 million. Not only that, but
he has bid farewell to teammates and members of staff at the Fairwood training ground on Tuesday, and is now set to become Coventry's first signing of the window.
The report outlines: "It's understood there is still some paperwork to be ironed out before the transfer can be rubber stamped, but the move is now expected to go through within the next few days."
Grimes has played the last of his 333 games the Swans, who are currently 17th in the Championship table, four points off Lampard's side as both eye a place in the play-offs by May. He is set for a medical on Thursday, per Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke:
Despite his age, Grimes could be a smart acquisition by Cov this month. There may not be resale value, but the calm, composed, and classy midfielder will raise the technical level of the midfield at the CBS Arena.
He has the metronomic passing range to control a game, while the 29-year-old has established his reputation as one of the most durable and consistent central midfielders outside of the top-flight ever since Swansea's relegation from the Premier League in 2018.
His importance has only been underlined since, after being named club captain a year later. Of course, the Coventry engine room has plenty of talent already, but none of the toolkit that Grimes will bring to the table.
He will hope to elevate his new teammates further and push them into the play-off picture. Grimes could complement the likes of Jack Rudoni, Ben Sheaf, Victor Torp, and Josh Eccles well for Lampard's side.
The West Midlands outfit sit just six points below the play-off spots, following a three-game winning streak in which they have defeated fellow top-six chasers Bristol City, Blackburn Rovers, and Watford during an impressive recent run.
