Ipswich Town reportedly want Jens Cajuste, but that will be a concern for young midfielder Cameron Humphreys.

Ipswich Town are preparing for a return to the Championship and will be expecting to immediately challenge for a return to the Premier League, and Kieran McKenna is leading the plans for that.

A part of that plan has now been reported as being that the Tractor Boys are interested in re-signing Jens Cajuste from Napoli, after the Sweden international spent last season on loan at Portman Road.

Cajuste was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise miserable return to the top-flight for Ipswich, and his return to Suffolk would be viewed as a major coup for a second division side.

What it would also represent, though, is yet another barrier to the first-team in the way of 21-year-old Cameron Humphreys, and that could see him weigh up his options this summer.

Humphreys will be concerned about Ipswich future

Humphreys, who reportedly earns £3,000 per week according to Capology, was one of the very best midfielders in League One last season and will be expecting to form a part of McKenna’s squad next season.

His performances whilst on loan at Wycombe Wanderers, under both Matt Bloomfield and then Mike Dodds, would even have him reasonably believing he should be in the hunt for a starting berth at Portman Road.

Colchester-born Humphreys, who came through the academy at Ipswich has made 39 appearances for the club - he was the midfield lynchpin for the Chairboys last season as they suffered a narrow 1-0 aggregate play-off semi-final defeat to Charlton Athletic.

Humphreys’ aesthetically pleasing technique was not just easy on the eye, but also very effective and he essentially made an attacking Wycombe side tick throughout the season, despite many changes.

Mid-way through the campaign, he lost his midfield partner Aaron Morley due to Bolton Wanderers recalling him from his loan, and then a few weeks’ later, Bloomfield left the club to take charge of Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.

Despite that, Humphreys remained excellent throughout, with his passing range and eye for goal something that was the envy of the rest of the division last year.

Humphreys would suit Ipswich’s style

Like all well-run clubs, Ipswich have a playing style throughout their age groups and when they sanction loan deals, it is often to clubs who will try and play the way in which they want their players to develop.

That was the case with Humphreys at Adams Park, and the passing, possession-dominant style of football that McKenna is known for at Ipswich is something that would be ideally suited to Ipswich – even down to the fact he is now adept in the 4-2-3-1 system at senior level.

The one concern that McKenna may have would be Humphreys’ mobility and athleticism, with the youngster able to be technically better than most in League One, but the league not requiring the same level of physical demands.

That is where Cajuste and his work rate shone in the harsh reality of the Premier League, and something that McKenna will crave due to the high intensity of Ipswich’s pressing game.

If Ipswich were able to bring Cajuste back to the club, it would be another roadblock for Humphreys and it may well cause him to consider his future as he continues his EFL career.
