Sheffield Wednesday's financial issues have not yet been fully resolved
Sheffield Wednesday have made progress in paying player wages for the month of May.
According to The Star, the overdue wages have been paid to some players in the first-team squad, but not all of them yet - some two weeks after they were due.
The EFL has recently charged the Owls, with this being the second time in three months that payments have not been issued on time after similar issues occurred for March's payment.
This has led to owner and chairman Dejphon Chansiri receiving more criticism, with supporters urging the Thai businessman to sell his stake in the club, especially after they were struck with a transfer embargo by the EFL for breaching Regulation 54.1 for non-payment of wages,.
It’s believed that the situation surrounding the late payments has led to a lot of frustration within the club.
The Sheffield Star have claimed that the first-team players that remain unpaid have not yet received an update on when that may be rectified.
And it has also been reported by journalist Matt Slater that Chansiri’s wealth has taken a significant hit due to the decrease in value of their stock in Thai Union, which could impact his ownership of the club.
The share price has dipped 35 per cent over the last year, but his company’s stake is still valued at £1.7 billion.
If the late payments issue is not resolved soon, then Sheffield Wednesday players who remain unpaid could potentially exit the club by terminating their contracts.
It is understood that, per FIFA’s rules, if players aren’t paid for two consecutive months then they can hand in a 14-day notice to terminate their contract if all arrears aren’t paid in that time, with the next set of wages due on 30 June.
This entire saga will have an impact on Sheffield Wednesday’s summer transfer plans, with the non-payment of wages enforcing a transfer embargo.
Danny Rohl remains in charge as manager, but speculation persists surrounding his future, with the German coach seemingly trying to force an exit route from Hillsborough.
It remains to be seen whether he will be in charge for next season, or if any players will be brought in to try and improve the squad anytime soon.
It was reported by The Star in April that Chansiri rejected an offer from a US-based consortium, who are attempting to purchase the Championship side.
Chansiri’s inability to get wages paid on time is a huge concern for the immediate prospects at Sheffield Wednesday.
The upcoming 30 June payments will surely be an issue if the owner is still catching up with May’s wages, which could lead to further charges from the EFL.
It could also lead to players opting to exit the club by terminating their contracts, which could leave the Owls in a very difficult position going into the new season.
If Chansiri is going to continue to have these financial issues, then it is imperative that he accepts an offer to sell the club quickly.
