Memphis Depay’s Netherlands call-up means Corinthians will be represented at the 2026 World Cup for the 16th time in the club’s history.
According to Globo.com, Memphis will be the club’s only representative at a tournament hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico.
The competition begins on Thursday at 16:00 Brasília time, with Mexico facing South Africa in the opening match at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
The Dutch forward becomes the 26th player to be selected for a World Cup while contracted to Corinthians. There have been 24 call-ups for Brazil, two for Argentina, and one each for Colombia, Paraguay and the Netherlands.
Five Corinthians players were selected but did not feature, namely the goalkeepers Cabeção, Ado, Dida and Cássio in 1954, 1970, 2002 and 2018 respectively, plus Oreco, a defender and left-back, in 1958.
Before Memphis, the most recent were Cássio and Fagner at the 2018 tournament in Russia. The roll call also includes Garrincha, Rivellino, Sócrates, Gamarra and Carlitos Tevez.
