Manchester City are among a number of elite clubs monitoring Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, with Real Madrid and Manchester United also tracking the 25-year-old Germany international ahead of the summer window.
Nmecha has developed into one of Borussia Dortmund‘s most important midfield players over the past two seasons, with his performances at the FIFA World Cup for Germany in North America having done nothing to diminish the level of interest from across European football.
City’s involvement adds a further dimension to what is shaping up to be one of the more closely contested midfield pursuits of the summer as the Blues undergo a major transition following the departure of Pep Guardiola as manager.
Manchester City identify ‘strong option’ instead of Elliot Anderson amid huge financial demands
The update arrives as City continue to negotiate with Nottingham Forest over Elliot Anderson and monitor Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali as alternative midfield options, with director of football Hugo Viana casting his net wide as he works to address what remains the most pressing area of the squad for incoming manager Enzo Maresca.
As reported by Sky Germany, Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is a strong admirer of Felix Nmecha and has made enquiries about his situation at Borussia Dortmund, with Manchester City and Manchester United also said to be monitoring the Germany international closely.
Mourinho’s midfield rebuild at the Santiago Bernabeu this summer has seen Bernardo Silva agree to join from City as a free agent, with a further central midfield addition among the Portuguese manager’s priorities before the window closes. Nmecha fits the profile Madrid are looking for, though the path to a deal this summer is far from straightforward.
Dortmund signed Nmecha to a new contract until 2030 in March, leaving the Bundesliga club in a powerful negotiating position. A release clause is included in the deal but does not become active until 2027, when Nmecha would be available for a fixed fee of €70 million.
Until that point, Dortmund retain complete control and have no intention of selling one of their key players this summer, with only an extraordinary offer capable of changing their position.
City’s monitoring of Nmecha reflects the breadth of Viana’s midfield search this summer, with the uncertainty around Rodri‘s contract, Tijjani Reijnders‘ future and the positions of Mateo Kovacic and Nico Gonzalez all contributing to a sense that more than one addition may be needed in the engine room.

Nmecha’s profile – a physically imposing, technically capable midfielder who contributes both defensively and in transition – would complement the more dynamic and attack-minded qualities City have been targeting in their primary pursuit of Anderson.
The release clause becoming active in 2027 may ultimately make a future move more realistic than a deal this summer, with Dortmund’s firm stance leaving City and their rivals with limited leverage in the short term.
