Matteo Gabbia received his first international call-up to the Italian National Team last week, and in his first Azzurri interview, he revealed which AC Milan song he sang in his initiation, whilst admitting he was not expecting a chance.

Under Paulo Fonseca, he has established himself as a starter and after his start to the season, Gabbia has thoroughly deserved a chance to impress with the National Team. At 24 years old he has a fantastic chance to establish himself within the set-up if he continues on this path.

Of course, it could have gone a different way. We only have to look to last year when Milan did not see a place for the homegrown talent in the squad, but after an injury crisis he came back as the saviour, and since then, Milanisti have only found new reasons to love him – most notably that goal against Inter.

Today, he spoke to Vivo Azzurro TV about his call-up and his words have been relayed by Milan News.

“Being here is a special feeling, I am very happy. I will try to enjoy this week giving my best and trying to understand what the coach wants. Wearing the national team jersey is a source of pride and a great responsibility, it is a jersey that must be honoured at all times.”

Initiation song…

“Singing is not one of my best qualities. I chose to sing ‘Sarà perché ti amo’ by Ricchi e Poveri because when Milan plays they sing it at the stadium, it has rhythm and I like it.”

Idols…

“I used to alternate between defence and midfield, I really liked Paolo Maldini and Daniele De Rossi.”

The only Milan player in the Azzurri group, he has also convinced Spalletti of the personality he shows on the pitch (‘He knows how to command the defensive department, he is very attentive and always keeps a high line,’ Spalletti said yesterday in a conference)…

“The coach’s words pleased me, they are a nice sign of esteem and trust. I’m getting to know Spalletti these days, I had only met him once at Milanello when he came to watch the training session. He was very friendly, it was nice to talk to him: he made a great impression on me. I haven’t thought about the debut, I hope it comes in one of these two games and that Italy can win.”
