Gabriel Gudmundsson has become the first Leeds United player confirmed for the 2026 World Cup, easing concern after his recent hamstring problem.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the left-back was included in Graham Potter’s 26-man Sweden squad announced on Tuesday night. He had missed Leeds’ last two matches following a hamstring issue sustained in last month’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea, with Daniel Farke ruling him out of Burnley and Tottenham.

It is unclear if the 27-year-old will be fit to face Brighton or West Ham, but his selection indicates the injury has not jeopardised his tournament prospects. Gudmundsson has been a regular under Potter, who took charge in October 2025, playing every qualifier and starting both March play-off ties.

Sweden beat Ukraine, then a 3-2 win over Poland sealed qualification. They are in Group F with the Netherlands, Japan and Tunisia, opening against Tunisia at three am on June 15 UK time, then the Netherlands on June 20 and Japan five days later. That final fixture could pit Gudmundsson against Elland Road teammate Ao Tanaka.

He is joined by fellow Premier League names, including Liverpool striker Alexander Isak, Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres and Newcastle United’s Anthony Elanga. Farke is expected to provide an update before Brighton, with assistant Edmund Riemer saying last week Gudmundsson would be assessed daily and they hope to have him back soon. With Leeds safe, they are unlikely to rush him despite injuries to Ilia Gruev, Jayden Bogle and Noah Okafor.
