Going into the 2025-26 campaign anything but a title win was seen as a failure to most Liverpool supporters.
Not only is that because of the £450 million+ that Richard Hughes and Slot spent in the summer but due to how dominant the Anfield outfit were last season.
However, since the Reds have now lost six of the 20 top flight games they've played, a title charge feels out of the question with Neville now sharing his thoughts on Liverpool's situation.
“They’re not at their best, they’re conceding goals still, it’s still not quite right up front," he said on the Gary Neville Podcast.
“But they look like they’re going to finish in the Champions League places, partly because they’re good enough to but partly because there aren’t enough teams around them good enough to knock them out of them. I think that’s going to be the reality for Liverpool.
“They’ve got enough good players up top , Salah’s going to come back. They’re going to get there in terms of Champions League place but they’re not going to shock us and go on a run in the second half of the season I don’t think.”
As mentioned, things haven't gone well for Liverpool this season.
And, even though they only managed to get a 2-2 draw with Fulham on Sunday, there have been signs over the last couple of weeks that things are finally coming together.
It's certainly taken its sweet time but with Florian Wirtz now getting in amongst the goals, it's slowly starting to look up for Liverpool.
And, when players such as Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak return to the pitch, things will surely only get better.
The 14-point gap between Liverpool and Arsenal is certainly not an easy hurdle to climb over but, if the Reds can remain consistent and beat those above them in their upcoming games, things could slowly start to turn in their favour.
