Tottenham have nine games to preserve their Premier League status
Gary Neville has explained why “it would be very good for the Premier League” if Tottenham were relegated.
Spurs, who finished 17th last season, are in grave danger of going down this season, sitting just one point above the bottom three with nine Premier League matches left to play.
Five of which are away from home, where Tottenham have picked up 19 of their 29 points thus far.
Spurs face a daunting task against Liverpool on Sunday and will slip into the relegation zone by the time they kick-off at Anfield if West Ham and Nottingham Forest beat Manchester City and Fulham respectively.
Despite sacking Thomas Frank and appointing Igor Tudor as interim head coach, Tottenham’s fortunes have not changed and they remain without a Premier League win in 2026.
The threat of relegation, while it seems unthinkable, has, at least, been acknowledged by the club, but Neville believes Spurs going down would have its benefits for the Premier League on a whole.
Neville, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast said: “Seeing Tottenham go down wouldn’t be great for Tottenham fans and I think they’re an amazing club, but it would be very good for the Premier League.
“From a competitive perspective and the idea of Leeds staying up, of Sunderland staying up, cause I was more worried at the start of the season that every club that came up was going straight back down.
“The league doesn’t necessarily need Spurs to go down, but needs clubs other than the ones who come up to go down.
“It would be sad to go down, but maybe they’ve had it coming.”
