George Elokobi will step down as Maidstone United manager at the end of the season after a landmark spell that included a record-breaking FA Cup run.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the club wanted him to stay, but financial pressure and delays to sale negotiations preceded Elokobi confirming his exit.

The Cameroon-born left back joined Wolves from Colchester United for £500,000 and made more than 100 appearances across the Premier League, Championship and League One.

He later played for Nottingham Forest, Bristol City and Oldham, returned to Colchester, then moved into non-league with Braintree, Leyton Orient and Aldershot before joining Maidstone for three seasons.

Initially signed for one season, he stayed and mentored in the academy during Covid while still playing.

He captained Maidstone to the National League South title, then retired, took the caretaker job and was appointed permanently, rebuilding the squad.

Two seasons ago Maidstone became the lowest-ranked side since 1978 to reach the FA Cup last 16, seeing off League One and Two teams before beating Ipswich to set up Coventry City.
