Gerard Martin talks Flick, Cubarsi, Ferran, Alvarez, ‘Maldini’ nickname, Champions League: ‘Everyone knows that’s the one we want’ | OneFootball

Speaking in an interview with Cadena SER, Barcelona defender Gerard Martín has revealed that Hansi Flick was the first person to call him ‘Gerard Maldini’, the nickname that has followed him ever since he successfully transitioned from left-back to left-sided centre-back.

The Barcelona defender also went on to discuss various other topics, including the club’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez and the future of teammate Ferran Torres.

The origin of ‘Gerard Maldini’

Martin explained that the story of his ‘Maldini’ nickname began during last summer’s pre-season tour, when Flick handed him an unexpected opportunity in the heart of the defence.

“It started during pre-season in Korea. I played my first match as a centre-back because the coach wanted to try me there,” he said.

“I did well, and afterwards he jokingly called me that. Then someone picked it up online and it just stuck. But the coach was the first one.”

What began as a light-hearted joke has since become closely associated with Martín’s impressive development in his new position.

The 24-year-old believes Flick deserves much of the credit for his progress over the past two seasons.

Since deciding to keep him with the first team, the German coach consistently showed confidence in him, even when opportunities were limited.

“From the moment he decided I would stay with the first team two seasons ago, I always felt his trust, even when I wasn’t playing much. That helped me grow and become the player I am today.”

Martin also described Flick’s management style, saying the Barcelona coach knows how to demand high standards while remaining fair.

“When he gets angry, he really gets angry, but he’s always very objective in his assessments.”

Although he initially alternated between left-back and central defence, Martin says there is no longer any doubt about where he sees his future.

“At first my mind was divided because I was switching between the two positions. Now I’m fully focused on playing as a centre-back. I think I had a very good season there, although there’s always room to improve.”

His performances alongside Pau Cubarsi eventually established the pair as Barcelona’s preferred central defensive partnership.

Martin also spoke highly of defensive partner Cubarsi, highlighting both their understanding on the pitch and the teenager’s remarkable maturity.

“We understand each other really well, and hopefully one day we’ll do the same with the national team.”

Despite Cubarsi’s young age, Martin believes his teammate already possesses qualities far beyond his years.

“For someone so young, he’s incredibly mature. You’d never guess his age by the way he plays.”

On Julian Alvarez and Ferran Torres

Martin, when asked if he liked Barcelona target Julian Alvarez, expressed confidence in the club’s board to do what needed to be done.

“We’ve signed two great players. Julian is a player I like, but the club will decide who they want to bring in for that position. Whoever they bring in will surely be good,” he said.

He also praised Ferran Torres’s level of play, both as a starter and as a substitute.

“He’s a great player, and he’s proven it these past seasons with us. Whether he’s started or come off the bench, he’s performed very well. He’s a player who contributes a lot,” Gerard noted.

Bigger ambitions for the new Season

Looking ahead, Martin set himself ambitious goals for the coming campaign. Like many of his teammates, he made it clear which competition tops the club’s priority list.

“The Champions League. Everyone knows that’s the one we want.”
