Gerard Moreno is Villarreal’s standard-bearer, their record scorer and captain. The Barcelona-born forward has 128 goals in 314 appearances, despite injuries that have hindered him.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, in a conversation at the Ciudad Deportiva José Manuel Llaneza he opened up, saying that after injuring himself on matchday 1 against Oviedo this season, at 33 he even considered retiring.
The support of his wife, three children, parents and brother was key to keeping him going. Inside the squad, figures such as Parejo, Foyth, Comesaña, Ayoze Pérez and Moleiro backed him. He is the dressing-room leader on and off the pitch.
He has taken the armband and stands alongside the club’s great captains from more than 25 years at the elite, from Quique Álvarez, Diego Cagna and Gonzalo Rodríguez to El Vasco Arruabarrena, Marcos Senna, Rubén Gracia ‘Cani’ and the great Bruno Soriano, el Mago de Artana.
A captain defined by humility, he says Villarreal are already one of the big clubs in Spain and firmly established in Europe.
This video analysis examines his season, shaped by injuries yet underpinned by sharp finishing. Moreno wants continuity and hopes to keep delivering joy to Villarreal and their supporters.
