For the large part of the opening round fixture, Germany U19 matched the Netherlands in a hard-fought encounter. However, two late goals meant they ended up losing heavily in their first U19 Euros game in eight years.
Hanno Balistch’s side had a flawless qualifying campaign, winning all six games throughout the two rounds. Including their top goal-getters Noah Darvich and Paris Brunner, Germany called up one of the best squads in the tournament.
Nonetheless, they could face elimination if the results go against them on matchday 2. Germany missed out in the past five tournaments. However, the core of this team won both the Euros and the World Cup at the U17 level a couple of years ago.
Team News
Assan Ouédraogo was one of the key players when Germany won the U17 World Cup for the first time. The RB Leipzig midfielder had a great impact coming off the bench against the Netherlands. He could be one of the first names if Balistch thinks about making changes to his starting lineup.
Meanwhile, there is one forced change expected in Germany’s defense. Elias Decker was off injured in the stroke of half-time, which could rule him out of the tournament. Leopold Wurm, who marked his debut with the equalizing goal against Denmark in last month’s friendly, could replace him as he did on Saturday.
England have twice failed to get out of the qualifying round since winning the 2022 competition in Slovakia. However, they progressed from the group stages in six of their last six appearances in final tournaments.
Will Antwi’s side had a tough start on Saturday when they left it late to snatch a draw against Norway. Tom Watson, who scored the goal that sent Sunderland back to the Premier League in his last appearance for the club, put them ahead before Hamburg’s Alexander Røssing-Lelesiit’s impact had Norway lead 2-1 at the break.
Mikey Moore, who also had a memorable season with Tottenham Hotspur, scored England’s equalizer ten minutes before the final whistle. Norway will face the Netherlands in Tuesday’s earlier fixture.
Team News
Crystal Palace’s Caleb Kporha took Triston Rowe’s right-back spot in the second-half of the game against Norway, and he could be a candidate for a starting berth for Tuesday.
