Real Madrid claimed a narrow but vital 1-0 victory at the Estadio Coliseum, with Kylian Mbappé striking in the 80th minute to secure all three points after a chaotic finale. Allan Nyom was sent off seconds after coming on, and Álex Sancris followed with a late red card of his own as Getafe’s resistance collapsed. David Soria had kept the hosts in the contest for long spells, but could do nothing to stop Mbappé’s precise finish into the top corner.
The result lifts Real Madrid two points clear at the top of LaLiga heading into next weekend’s El Clásico against Barcelona. Xabi Alonso’s side will also welcome Juventus to the Bernabéu in midweek for their Champions League clash. It wasn’t the most fluent display from Los Blancos, but Mbappé’s composure proved decisive in a tense away encounter.
Real Madrid began on the front foot, dominating possession and territory in the opening stages. Mbappé forced the first save of the evening from Soria, while Rodrygo looked lively down the right flank. Getafe, defending deep in their compact shape, threatened only once before the interval when Sancris’ fierce half-volley whistled just wide of Thibaut Courtois’ right post.
Before half-time, David Alaba came closest for the visitors with a curling free-kick which Soria parried away awkwardly, ensuring the first 45 minutes ended goalless despite Real Madrid’s control.
After the restart, Getafe showed more ambition. Domingos Duarte’s late challenge on Jude Bellingham earned him a booking, while Adrián Liso’s quick turn and shot from the edge of the box flashed narrowly wide. Alonso turned to his bench, bringing on Vinícius Junior and Arda Güler to add spark. The changes injected pace – Mbappé twice went close, first dragging a shot wide from a tight angle, then sending a free-kick inches past the post.
The game’s turning point arrived in the 76th minute. Nyom, introduced moments earlier, was shown a straight red for a reckless off-the-ball foul on Vinícius. Just four minutes later, Real Madrid punished the hosts: Güler slipped a perfectly timed through ball into Mbappé, who swivelled and rifled a right-footed strike into the top corner beyond Soria.
Getafe’s frustration boiled over as Sancris, already booked, was sent off in the 84th minute for lashing out off the ball. Seven minutes of added time followed, during which Aurélien Tchouaméni picked up a yellow card and Álvaro Carreras almost made it two with a driven effort that shaved the post. Despite late pressure from the hosts, Real Madrid saw the game out to claim a crucial win.
