Freiburg had a blistering start in Düsseldorf in midweek when they scored twice in the first six minutes. They were also in the rush for similar effect, but all that's happened early in the game was a yellow card for Junior Adamu in the first minute.
András Schäfer, who was the fouled player in what led to the quick caution, attempted the first shot on target in the tenth minute. Freiburg enjoyed the majority of possession, and Matthias Ginter thought he put them in front in the 17th minute.
However, the hand of the former German international caused the goal to be chalked off by VAR. Shortly after, the visitors were fortunate to continue playing with ten. Much to the disapproval of the home fans, Sören Storks decided against dishing out a second yellow card for Adamu after his foul on Rani Khedira, who was also cautioned a couple of minutes earlier.
Julian Schuster decided to replace Adamu with Igor Matanovic five minutes before the break. The second-half also started with very little action in the final third of both penalty boxes.
Freiburg’s first big chance of the half came from set-piece play, but Lucas Höler missed to hit the target. Only after coming on a couple of minutes earlier, Union's captain Christopher Trimmel provided the cross that led to Ilić's goal, but this one was also cancelled because of Khedira's foul on the process.
The hosts felt undone by once again after a decision that required a lengthy VAR check. Moments later, Noah Atubolu pulled a great save from Ilyes Ansah as Union pushed for a late winner. The hosts finished the game strongly, but they couldn't manage to beat Atubolu in Freiburg’s goal. Steffen Baumgart picked another yellow card in the final minute of injury-time.
Freiburg will face OGC Nice in the Europa League on Thursday before finally returning to home comfort next weekend's game against St. Pauli. Union Berlin will head into the international break after welcoming the mighty Bayern Munich to Försterei.
